I read it over again, fighting against white-hot fear.

This was it.

Cate’s life was hanging by a thread now. The note said it all. If we didn’t pay, they would kill her.

God, no!

But how had it gotten in my locker? No one knew the combination but me. No one….

The kidnapper had been here, standing where I was now.

I hoped to God they’d left some prints on the metal door.

I reached inside for my purse, then closed the door.

Stefan…

He needed to know this.

I ran frantically back to the cardiac unit, not caring who stared at me as I headed to the stairwell. Pulling open the door, I raced down the metal stairs as fast as my feet would go. I dashed through the lobby and out the main doors.

Stefan walked across the parking lot but turned his head when he heard me calling to him. He stared at me, his expression alert.

“What is it?”

“It’s a note from the kidnappers. It was in my locker—my locked locker! They want the money by tomorrow at midnight.” With trembling hands, I fumbled for my cell phone. “I have to call Mallory.”
